UN/EDIFACT
EDI/XML
ASC X12, chartered by the American National Standards Institute [ANSI] in 1979, develops electronic data interchange [EDI] standards for national and global markets. With more than 315 X12 EDI standards and increasing X12 XML schemes, ASC X12 enhances business processes, reduces costs and expands organizational reach. More than 300,000 companies worldwide use the X12 EDI standards in their daily business transactions.
UN/EDIFACT [the United Nations rules for Electronic Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce and Transport] comprise a set of internationally agreed standards, directories, and guidelines for the electronic interchange of structured data, between independent computerized information systems. Recommended within the framework of the United Nations, the rules are approved and published by UNECE in the UNTDID (United Nations Trade Data Interchange Directory) and are maintained under agreed procedures.
XML, or Extensible Markup Language, works in concert with EDI. It is a high-powered Web language developed for e-business and enables the exchange of structured data. By enhancing EDI processes, ASC X12 can evolve the current infrastructure into something more universally accessible. XML, with EDI as the foundation, provides ubiquitous connectivity and interoperability.
